technology
simplicity?
We like to think that simplicity is our watchword and for us, the simpler the better.
For this reason we use only common protocols and technologies, ones that are available to everybody and understood by all.
We use straightforward internet protocols, such as HTTP and HTML, using standard ports and striving to make things as uncomplicated as possible.
Our main aim is to get you up-and-running as quickly as possible, with the minimum of fuss.
courage?
Well, it's all about communication and unfortunately, in this digital age, communication is fraught with problems. Some of them brought upon ourselves.
Firewalls are a particular hazard nowadays. They are great for preventing unauthorised access and malicious attacks but will sometimes prevent legitimate
traffic from passing if there seems to be anything unusual about it. Because we only ever use HTTP on port 80, anyone that enjoys internet access can have
the courage to use our products without the fear of being blocked or the worry of having to configure their firewall to allow it.
communication?
We call it desktop alerting but it is essentially a desktop monitoring system of which there are two parts.
- The server where you register and enter your news items/alerts.
- A desktop software application/widget that we call a 'newsling'
The newsling is essentially a mini-browser installed on your customer's desktop that minimises to the system tray and every so often communicates with the
server to see if there are any new items. If there are, it downloads a small web page with a link in it from the server, before popping up and
displaying it to the user. When the user clicks on the link, the newsling opens the main browser and navigates to the correct page.
Of course, every account has its own unique and individually packaged newsling.
